The refrigerator is a great tool for storing foods. But do you know which foods should not be refrigerated? There are certain items, even against popular belief, that should not be stored in the refrigerator. By refrigerating many items, the flavor can be lessened or change the texture, and in some cases, even make it spoil faster because of condensation from the refrigerator.


  • TOMATOES – Refrigerating tomatoes changes their texture and flavor.
  • HONEY – Honey will crystallize and thicken faster in the fridge. So keep it at room temperature.
  • GARLIC – Garlic will sprout and grow mold in the fridge.
  • COFFEE – If you don’t want your coffee to lose its bold flavor and absorb the odors in your fridge, leave it out.
  • BREAD – bread gets hard and dry in the fridge. make it last by freezing or keeping it in a paper bag with a cloth towel around it.
  • HOT SAUCE – Hot sauce can be stored in your cabinet for up to three years.
  • ONIONS – Onions get moldy and mushy when refrigerated.
  • BASIL – Basil and other fresh herbs will wilt and absorb other odors.
  • MELONS – Melons lose their antioxidants in the fridge… and you want all of those you can get.
  • POTATOES – Refrigerating potatoes affects their flavor and makes them gritty and dried out.
  • HARD LIQUOR – Always store hard liquor at room temperature.
  • BATTERIES – extreme cold (or heat) can diminish performance.
  • NAIL POLISH – It is not recommended to store nail polish in the refrigerator because it can cause it to thicken. 
  • OLIVE OIL – You should store olive oil in a cool, dark place, but not in the fridge, where it will condense and turn to a harder, almost butter-like consistency.
  • SQUASH – Store the squash on shelves or tables and not in refrigerator. Both colder and warmer temperatures shorten storage time.
